Children's Institute, Inc.

Children’s Institute, Inc. helps youth and families in Los Angeles’ poorest neighborhoods recover from the trauma of violence and develop the skills and self-esteem to lead healthy, successful lives.

Children's Institute, Inc.'s (CII) comprehensive model is designed to address the whole child as well as the entire family. CII delivers evidence-based clinical programs shown to reduce emotional and behavioral problems, preserve and reunite families, and support success in school. These and complementary youth development activities seek to reduce young people’s trauma and increase resilience.

In 2011, CII opened its Otis Booth Campus, a 48,000-square-foot facility near downtown Los Angeles, one of L.A.'s most challenged communities. It serves over 19,000 youth and families each year across Los Angeles with a unique blend of clinical, youth development, family support, and early childhood services. In 2014, CII purchased land for a new campus in Watts, which world-renowned architect Frank Gehry donated his time to design.

OUR INVESTMENT

Since 2011, EMCF has invested $18.5 million in Children's Institute, Inc. In 2011, CII received a $5 million, three-year Social Innovation Fund award from EMCF and became a True North Fund grantee to support expansion in Watts and Central Los Angeles so that more youth can benefit from evidence-based programming.

In 2012 EMCF made a Program-Related Investment (PRI) of $5 million to support CII’s growth and capital needs. In 2017, EMCF invested $1.1 million to help CII build its organizational capacity and complete business planning.

These investments helped CII:

  • Grow from serving 2,500 youth aged 9-24 in 2013 to 3,900 in 2020;
  • Expand programming throughout Los Angeles, with significant expansion in Watts and South LA;
  • Begin construction on a new CII campus in Watts designed by Frank Gehry; and
  • Conduct implementation and fidelity studies that informed the agency’s program mix.
