Green Dot Public Schools

Green Dot Public Schools is a leader in transforming public education in Los Angeles and beyond so that all young adults receive the education they deserve to prepare for college, leadership and life.

Green Dot operates charter middle and high schools in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Los Angeles.

By creating a small school environment more conducive to learning (numbering no more than 560 students per school, compared with more than 3,500 in a typical in Los Angeles public high school), it maintains attendance rates close to 95 percent, and its students achieve stronger  results than their counterparts  in traditional public schools.

OUR INVESTMENT

EMCF invested $7.1 million in Green Dot from 2004 to 2012. Our investments helped it open 13 new schools and increase its student capacity by 650 percent.

In fall 2008, Green Dot took over administration of Locke High School in Watts, becoming the first private organization to run a traditional public high school in Los Angeles, and created six high-performing small schools in its place.

Green Dot was also able to complete several quality improvement and organizational strengthening initiatives, including codifying its program model and core curriculum, and implementing a comprehensive professional development program.

In 2009, it launched a multi-cohort evaluation by UCLA’s National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing, to assess student achievement at the Locke family of high schools.
