Supporting Grants

To assist youth-serving grantees become more effective in their work, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation makes a limited number of targeted grants to intermediary organizations that provide specialized training and expertise in the areas of evaluation and performance tracking; strategy development and refinement; talent recruitment, retention and development; communications; board strengthening; and fundraising. America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth

New York, NY - $50,000 over six months to support EMCF grantees identify opportunities to build their programs as a result of the federal stimulus package signed into law on February 17, 2009.

The Bridgespan Group, Inc.

Boston, MA - $1,740,000 over 15 months to provide consulting support to the Foundation's grantees on business planning and ongoing strategic planning and assistance, as well as provide advisory support on the Foundation's Youth Development Fund grantmaking strategy.

Cheswick Center

Boston, MA - $384,000 over two years to assess EMCF's grantmaking approach on its grantees, including those participating in EMCF's Growth Capital Aggregation Pilot.


Learning as Leadership

San Rafael, CA - $200,000 over one year to provide leadership development programming to EMCF grantees.

Boston, MA - $200,000 over one year to provide executive coaching and support to the chief executives of EMCF grantees.


MDRC

New York, NY - $195,000 over one year to advise Citizen Schools, Youth Villages and YouthBuild on planning related to conducting randomized controlled trials.

New York, NY - $2 million over five years to undertake a randomized controlled trial evaluation of Youth Villages' Transitional Living and Intercept programs.

New York University

New York, NY - $245,000 over nine months to support work by the University's Research Center for Leadership in Action. The Center will plan a peer learning session among EMCF grantees, as well as organize and conduct EMCF 2009 grantees retreat.

Boston, MA - $66,000 over one year to provide consultation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to strengthen BBBS' school based mentoring program.

Venture Fund

The Foundation also makes a very limited number of grants through its Venture Fund to support projects or make investments in organizations that fall outside its current Youth Development strategy, but help advance its overall mission. The Foundation also uses Venture Fund grants to advance areas that are essential to the long-term quality and effectiveness of its work, such as evaluation, communications and philanthropy.

When the White House announced the creation of a Social Innovation Fund to support expanding “innovative, promising ideas that are transforming communities,” it cited as examples four grantees of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation: Nurse-Family Partnership, Youth Villages, Harlem Children’s Zone and Citizen Schools.
