Supporting Grants

To assist youth-serving grantees become more effective in their work, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation makes a limited number of targeted grants to intermediary organizations that provide specialized training and expertise in the areas of evaluation and performance tracking; strategy development and refinement; talent recruitment, retention and development; communications; board strengthening; and fundraising. The Bridgespan Group, Inc.

Boston, MA - $1,974,000 over one year to provide consulting support to the Foundation's grantees on business planning and ongoing strategic planning and assistance, as well as provide advisory support on the Foundation's Youth Development Fund grantmaking strategy.

Cheswick Center

Boston, MA - $250,000 over one year for continued work on evaluating and documenting the successes and challenges facing the Foundation and its Youth Development Fund grantmaking approach.


The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation

New York, NY - $200,000 over one year to provide organizational development support to the Foundation's grantees in areas such as executive coaching, board development, information technology, program quality improvement, and organizational strengthening.

Boston, MA - $75,000 over six months to provide support to Nurse-Family Partnership, Citizen Schools, and Youth Villages develop and implement advanced growth capital campaigns.


New York University Research Center for Leadership in Action

New York, NY - $320,000 over one year to plan, organize, and facilitate grantee peer-to-peer learning activities, including the Foundation's 2007 grantees retreat.

New York, NY - $485,000 over six months to design and develop a specialized leadership institution for the Foundation's grantees that addresses the particular talent development and recruitment challenges facing these organizations.

Venture Fund

The Foundation also makes a very limited number of grants through its Venture Fund to support projects or make investments in organizations that fall outside its current Youth Development strategy, but help advance its overall mission. The Foundation also uses Venture Fund grants to advance areas that are essential to the long-term quality and effectiveness of its work, such as evaluation, communications and philanthropy.

Note: The Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications for supporting grants or for the Venture Fund.


Center for Effective Philanthropy, Inc.

Boston, MA - $500,000 over four years for general operating support and to continue the development of a set of tools to assess and improve the effectiveness of foundations.  The grant will enable the organization to broaden its research agenda, plan and hold programming for grantmakers, expand its assessment tool offerings, and address critical organizational infrastructure needs.

The Children's Health Fund

New York, NY - $636,000 over 18 months to conduct an implementation evaluation assessing the impact its services have in improving the health and academic achievement of its participants, as well study the link between access to proper medical care and academic performance.

Child Trends, Inc.

Washington, DC - $250,000 over 18 months to continue its ongoing research on ways to reach and help America's "disconnected youth," expand its online database of evaluations of youth programs, and promote greater understanding of "program effectiveness" among funders and youth practitioners.

Naperville, IL - $50,000 over one year for general operating support and to produce a report documenting the best practices in online communications by grantmaking institutions.

Philadelphia, PA - $75,000 over one year to support efforts by the Evaluation Roundtable and the Learning and Evaluation Action Program to assist funders incorporate evaluation practices in their grant decision-making process to increase the effectiveness of their grantmaking.

Public/Private Ventures

Philadelphia, PA - $200,000 over one year to establish JobsFirstNYC, a new young-adult workforce development intermediary organization.  The new enterprise will work to increase awareness of the large numbers of "disconnected" youth in New York City, and mobilize, coordinate and increase efforts by funders, employers, government agencies, and social service providers to assist them.  The organization will also assist service providers improve their data collection and outcomes tracking.
